LatinX in AI

Supercomputer Network

Mission

We aim to strengthen the capacities of the LatinX artificial intelligence ecosystem including researchers, academics, students, nascent startups, and NGO and civil societies interested in harnessing the potential of data science and AI for social or ambiental endeavors through access to infrastructure. Additionally, This initiative will provide opportunities for improving skills and proficiency in the state of the art in artificial intelligence, computer vision, natural language, and other related technologies.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

  • Academic & Industry Researchers

Faculty and Independent Researchers from Universities and Research Centers who have good research records and/or innovative ideas, but lack high-computing resources or training.

  • AI Startups

Nascent Startups that might not have the resources to train a model for a minimum viable product or that require to train models for prototyping purposes.

  • NGOs (AI for Good)

NGO, NonProfit Orgs, or individual members of the civil society that seeks to harness the power of data science or artificial intelligence for social good or environmental research.

  • Graduate Students

Masters and Ph.D. students from a research academic program. Students are required to be full-time, have high grades, and be a student in the last 6 months.

  • Research Challenge Organizers

Research Challenge Organizers that aim to advance the state of the art in some discipline via competitions, hackathons, or other means that are hardware intensive.

Origins

A recent analysis of Government AI readiness led by Oxford Insights and the IDRC listed no Latin American countries in their top 20 rankings citing three key challenges in harnessing the use of AI for the common good: policies, capacity, and adequate resources. They scored each country and government according to their preparedness to use AI in the delivery of public services. They’ve stated these findings as “a timely reminder of the ongoing inequality around access to AI.”

In this sense, this program aims at strengthening the capacities of several actors in the LATAM artificial intelligence ecosystem such as researchers, academics, students, nascent startups, NGOs, and civil societies interested in harnessing the potential of data science and AI for social or environmental endeavors. We intend to do so through access to infrastructure, the rich and vibrant of fellow LXAI members, as well as opportunities for improving their skills and proficiency in the state of the art in artificial intelligence, computer vision, natural language, and other related technologies.

Many LATAM countries such as Mexico, Brazil, Perú, Chile, Colombia, among others are developing their national AI strategies, and they conclude a need for the development and attraction of talent, technological infrastructure, international collaboration, and easy access to public data. However, many LATAM universities and research centers struggle to access high-performance computing due to high prices, low government investment in research, and limited international collaborations. We aim to tackle these issues by providing an international network of GPUs for LATAM access. This infrastructure can boost LATAM international collaboration, and seed early career professionals.

Our aim is to provide seed resources for early career professionals. Our resources will boost early-stage research, and provide sufficient evidence for more ambitious projects. We encourage researchers to present intermediate results as research publications or patents.

Our main goals include:

  • Increase LATAM research opportunities in Artificial Intelligence by providing high-performance computing resources to researchers and students in LATAM.

  • Increase representation of LatinX and LATAM researchers and students in the Artificial Intelligence community, including Professorships, Industrial Research Laboratories, and nascent undergrad and graduate programs.

  • Build capacity for Artificial Intelligence Research in LATAM countries.

  • Remove hardware and financial barriers to producing high-quality research in Artificial Intelligence in LATAM countries.
