LatinX in AI
Research Workshop at
ICML 2026
July 7th, 2026 | Seoul, South Korea
COEX Convention & Exhibition Center
This is an official workshop on July 7th 2026 of the LatinX in AI (LXAI) organization at ICML. The event will take place at the COEX Convention & Exhibition Center
The workshop is a one-day event with invited speakers, oral presentations, and posters. The event brings together faculty, graduate students, research scientists, and engineers for an opportunity to connect and exchange ideas. There will be a panel discussion and a mentoring session to discuss current research trends and career choices in artificial intelligence and machine learning.
While all presenters will identify primarily as LatinX, everyone is invited to attend.

Agenda
Keynote Speakers
Speaker: Belen Martin-Urcelay
Belén Martín-Urcelay is an incoming postdoctoral researcher at the University of Stuttgart, where she will work with Andreas Bulling. She recently completed her Ph.D. at Georgia Tech, where her research focused on human-in-the-loop machine learning and collaborative AI, especially on how learning systems can obtain richer information from humans than labels alone. Her broader interests include active learning, human feedback, and multimodal learning. Beyond research, she is passionate about teaching, mentoring, and promoting women in STEM.
Alex Hernandez-Garcia is an assistant professor at the Université de Montréal, a core academic member at Mila, IVADO professor and member of Obvia and the Institut Courtois. His research in machine learning is motivated by scientific applications to tackle the climate crisis and other societal challenges. In particular, a current focus of his work is on active and generative machine learning to facilitate scientific discoveries, such as new materials and antibiotics. He also advocates for a critical examination of the impacts of artificial intelligence and its role in society. He is a proponent of open science and is active in initiatives about making science more inclusive, equitable, reproducible, transparent and environmentally conscious.
Speaker: Alex Hernandez-Garcia
Speaker: Jesús Solano
Jesus Solano is a doctoral researcher in Computer Science at ETH Zürich, specializing in Machine Learning models for cybersecurity. His research focuses on the intersection of secure authentication using Computer Vision, privacy-preserving ML, and explainable AI. Prior to joining ETH Zürich, Jesus earned his MSc in Machine Learning from University College London (UCL) in the United Kingdom; and a BSc in Physics from Universidad de los Andes in Colombia. Beyond academia, Jesus is also a passionate entrepreneur and co-founder of thenti, a start-up dedicated to make the world more secure by effortlessly authenticating physical entities with digital means. He also has experience working on adversarial machine learning, behavioral biometrics, financial options valuation and high-energy physics.

Call For Papers
LXAI will receive papers in any subject accepted by ICML. At least one of the authors must identify as LatinX. Submissions will be double-blind peer-reviewed (that is, make sure to not reveal your names, institutions, or country anywhere in the document) and should be submitted as a PDF file through OpenReview. All submissions must be in English and strictly follow the format provided by the ICML 2025. Papers using any other format will be desk rejected without review. You can submit your paper to one of two categories:
Extended Abstract: Up to 4 pages, excluding references.
Full Paper: Up to 8 pages long, excluding references. (papers with less than 6 pages might be rejected without review or automatically delegated to the extended abstract category).
The number of pages above includes space taken by figures, tables, and equations. At the authors' discretion.
Specific ICML topics include, but are not limited to:
General Machine LearningDeep LearningEvaluation (methodology, meta studies, replicability and validity, human-in-the-loop, etc.)Theory of Machine LearningMachine Learning Systems
Optimization
Probabilistic MethodsReinforcement LearningTrustworthy Machine LearningApplication-Driven Machine Learning
Accepted papers will be invited to be included in the Journal of LatinX in AI Research (JLXAIR). Authors of accepted papers may choose between two options:
Archival: The paper will be permanently published in JLXAIR and included in its official records.
Non-archival: The paper will be presented at the LXAI event but not included in the journal’s permanent archive, allowing authors to submit it elsewhere in the future
All accepted papers must be prepared using the official LXAI camera-ready style files:
If you have any questions, please email to lxai-icml-26@latinxinai.org

Papers accepted to any official ICML track that have at least one author identifying as LatinX are warmly invited to join the workshop. To streamline the process, we offer direct acceptance for these works:
Automatic Approval: If your paper was accepted to a main ICML track, it is guaranteed a spot at this workshop.
Submission Process: When submitting via OpenReview, please select the specific label/tag designated for "Main Track Accepted Papers."
Verification: You will be asked to provide proof of acceptance (such as your official notification) during the submission process.
Call for reviewers
The Role of a Reviewer As a reviewer, you will play a crucial role in maintaining the quality and relevance of our submissions. By providing valuable, constructive feedback to authors, you directly help shape the content of our workshop and mentor emerging researchers. We are seeking individuals who are enthusiastic about fostering diversity in AI and committed to advancing the state of the art through rigorous scholarly communication.
